District Energy System Harvests Energy from Wastewater to Heat 16,000 New Homes
The Lakeview Village District Energy (LVDE) will turn the 177-acre site of a former coal power plant into a revamped waterfront community, with more than 16,000 new housing units, an innovation district, restaurants, parkland and more. The District Energy project plans to use thermal energy from treated wastewater, or effluent, at the G.E. Booth Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Clarkson Wastewater Treatment Plant to create energy to support the planned Lakeview Village Development.
Lakeview Community Planners Ltd. (LCPL) first engaged FVB in 2018 to assess the feasibility of implementing a low carbon district energy network at the Lakeview redevelopment site. FVB evaluated both the technical and financial feasibility and issued an actional report to the client which also included a summary of the various applicable ownership and operating models of a district energy system. The results of that report was an FVB led request for interest process to engage the private sector to see what could be offered. The resulting FVB led RFP identified the eventual partner, Enwave Energy Corporation, who has signed on as the Owner/Operator of the DES.
FVB was kept on board as an Owners Engineer for LCPL throughout implementation of the project to ensure that the original intent of the DES is maintained and that the builders, property managers, and most importantly, the home/business owners, can benefit from low carbon thermal energy at a competitive market price.
