Client: Oakridge Energy

Year: 2019 to Present

FVB Energy has been involved with the Oakridge Energy project since performing the Design Development study in early 2019.  As part of the Design and Development Study, FVB screened various alternate energy sources including cooling heat recovery, geo-exchange, sewer heat recovery, de-watering heat recovery, biomass, and electric boilers. FVB developed four viable concepts and used technical and financial analyses to assess compare each option.

The preferred concept includes a mixture of energy sources – cooling heat recovery, de-watering heat recovery, electric boilers, natural gas boilers and closed-loop geo-exchange with approximately 578 boreholes – to optimize costs while achieving stringent GHG requirements required by ownership and the city. The innovative District Energy System (DES) planned to serve the Oakridge Center Redevelopment will include a centralized heating and cooling plant to serve the 4.9 million square foot redevelopment of the Oakridge Mall site. The central plant will be located 3 levels underground which has led FVB to undertake careful planning of the HVAC coordination, exhaust stack routing and relief piping. This challenge also includes cooling towers located 23 storeys above ground.

Subsequently FVB developed a schematic design for the district energy system and produce Class 3 cost estimates to assist Oakridge Energy with their BC Utilities Commission application. This included developing the heating and cooling systems as well as developing the distribution piping concept and energy transfer schematic. FVB further prepared AACE Class 3 cost estimates for the Energy Centre, Energy Transfer Stations (ETS), and Distribution Piping System (DPS).

Since completing schematic design and Class 3 cost estimates, FVB has supported Oakridge Energy in coordination with the base building design team and developing the DES design as necessary to meet the building requirements.

FVB Energy was the prime consultant for the entirety of this project completing, amongst other things, the design development study, financial and energy modeling, schematic design and detailed design. FVB and continues to support the client as the Owner’s Engineer.
